The 100 Best K-Pop Songs of All-Time: Starting Monday!

To celebrate The Bias List's five year anniversary, I started my most ambitious project to date. After years of folding and folding, I've finally classified what I think is right the best 100 songs in K-Pop.

There will never be a definitive list of this kind because it is impossible to classify something that is inherently subjective. Please feel welcome to agree, disagree, argue and justify, but at the end of the day you know that this list is personal. If we happen to share a similar taste in music, it may fit your own list. If not, I hope you still enjoy reading (and discussing)!

As with any project of this size, I set certain criteria before diving into it. The ranking of a song is based on a combination of these three factors:

quality

Up to a point, "quality" is subjective, but you all now know what I consider to be a hallmark of a good song: strong melody, consistently committed production, etc. This was the most weighted of my three criteria.

heritage

This wasn't a big factor in my rankings, but I definitely considered the reputation and influence of a song in the big scheme of things.

Personal experience

As I said, this list is personal – just like every best-of-list should be. Songs will beat differently depending on personality, taste and life experience. For me, many of these songs evoke strong memories or feelings that may not be available to every listener.

1. This list is exclusive to title tracks and songs advertised with music videos, although I don't think much would have changed if I had included B-sides.
2. Japanese publications through Korean files are not permitted.
3. I do not include songs released in 2020. They just aren't there long enough to read them carefully.

Eventually, some eagle-eyed readers will find that certain song rankings have changed since their placement in the year-end countdowns or top ten. Some of this is due to the natural ups and downs that come with time and experience, but the act of ranking over years and decades really made me rethink some things. It was definitely an interesting process!

Here's the plan, though the timeline can change if necessary. All days / times US Pacific time.
